SUMMARY OF SEASON 2020
A season which will be remembered primarily for the lack of rod fishing, or fishing effort as the Scottish Government describe it. Restrictions on movement due to the pandemic, together with low water throughout the greater part of the season were the principal reasons for this. Most of the catch was in the final month, October. One successful party observed that few fish were showing and those they caught were primarily hen fish.
In earlier years, anglers on the Castle Forbes water have had their fishing disrupted too! Arriving from London on Good Friday, 1939, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and a friend, as recorded by the "Press and Journal":
"went down river to the most likely pools. They fished the waters almost down to the end of the run which adjoins the Tillyfour stretch.
It was not a good day for angling. The bright, warm sunshine was showing up the bed of the river except in the deeper pots. Later a snell wind started to blow, and for a short time it was dull enough to lure a fish, but the sun came out again. Only the sound of the birds and the rustle of the trees disturbed the serene quiet.
A wood sheltered the Prime Minister and his companion from the cold breeze. They had come over a mile downstream, and in the early afternoon sat down to eat their sandwiches. This alfresco meal finished, they moved up the water, and they returned from the river about half-past seven with their empty basket".
That same day, Mussolini's Italy invaded Albania. The Prime Minister, rather than enjoying his Easter holiday week on the Don, had to depart Aberdeen station for London the following day.
Interestingly, both Clement Attlee, the leader of the Opposition and the Leader of the Liberal Party, Sir Archibald Sinclair, were laid low with influenza at this time.
Some very decent daily catches were achieved.
